Child Neglect is preventable, and your generous donation can be instrumental in helping to change children's lives. When emergencies occur, single mother's and struggling families are faced with further and often greater hardships. Children are especially vulnerable to neglect during such times.
What exactly is child neglect and how is it different from child abuse? According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, "Neglect is frequently defined as the failure of a parent or other person with responsibility for the child to provide needed food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or supervision to the degree that the child's health, safety, and well-being are threatened with harm." This neglect can be mild, moderate, or severe. More often than not, child neglect is the result of a parent's lack of sustainable resources. This is especially true in the case of single mothers who are often underemployed and underpaid and have a lack of resources available to them especially in times of emergencies. Hurricanes
Florida's children in need are especially vulnerable in the event of hurricanes. Single mothers and struggling families are often not prepared to navigate the short term and long term effects of natural disasters such as our frequent hurricanes. When others are rushing to stores to stock up on food and supplies, these families often don't have the ready cash available to prepare or sustain such an event. They often don't have the resources to escape the storm to safe locations that require a workable vehicle, gas, or a hotel stay. More often than not, they often can't even make it to a safe local shelter. Rather, they end up "riding out" terrifying storms. If their home survives, they could face days of no electricity or accessible drinking water. Often, drinking water is stockpiled at local pickup points that are difficult to reach by struggling families in rural areas. As days of overwhelming issues can lead to hopelessness, children are particulary vunerable to neglect. As the next hurricane season approaches, your donation now can help a child that might be impacted by such a natural disaster. Help in a Hurricane Now
Covid 19 Pandemic
This past year, in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic, children of single mothers became especially at risk when charitable organizations where flooded with requests for help. Social Media sites continue to be common places struggling families appealed to the public for help. In a recent post on a Florida panhandle site, a mother had exhausted all local charities to include church pantries and simply stated: "I have three small children and we have nothing to eat for dinner tonight." Several locals offered to bring her some canned food which she thankfully accepted." Things should never get to this point as the impact from such continued desperation can have a significant affect on the children involved. Not to mention, as a society, we can do so much better.
According to the Sanford Social Innovation Review regarding the current and potential Impact of Covid 19 on Nonprofits, " During this period of extreme financial pressures brought about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations in the nonprofit sector are feeling particularly squeezed as they work to continue to provide support and services to what is already an expanding client population, and at the same time that revenues from services have dried up and donations from their traditional fundraising activities have declined. Every nonprofit leader has had to respond to the pandemic and take steps to help their organization survive. Some have had to lay off staff and cut salaries and others have had to cut programs."

Home Fires
Children of single mothers and struggling families often live in rundown, unsafe homes with outdated electrical wiring. Often these homes were constructed of materials that do not meet today's codes. According to the US Fire Administration, Florida had a higher than national average of home fires resulting in 69 casualties, several of these being children." A home fire is a devastating event that can easily leave a family temporarily homeless resulting in the loss of a child's basic need of shelter. Such situations can also result in families being split apart in an attempt to survive the economic impact, again, leaving children exposed to the consequences. According to the US Department of Health and Human Resources, Child Neglect: A Guide for Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention, a child can end up being "shuttled" or moved around from one caretaker to the next or left in the care of an inappropriate caregiver," as the result of such homelessness. Again, your kind donation can help a single mother or struggling family navigate through such hardships together.
